How does image upscaling work?

Upscaling enlarges the image by 2x, 4x or 8x using Lanczos interpolation and then applies sharpening tuned for the new size. The result is smooth, clean and noticeably sharper on high-DPI screens and in print, instead of the blurry look you get when a browser stretches a small image.

Upscaling does not invent photographic detail: it rebuilds pixels from what is in the file. For small web images, heavily downscaled photos and graphics the visual gain is clear; for text and line art use the sharpening carefully.

Which factors are available?

Upscaling uses Lanczos interpolation with adaptive sharpening. To keep results fast and stable the factor is automatically reduced for very large sources: the output never exceeds 40 megapixels and stays within format limits (16383 px per side for WebP and AVIF, 65500 px for JPEG).

How to upscale an image?

How to control the output file size?

You can set a maximum file size in KB. The tool then picks the highest quality that still fits your budget, using an automatic binary search over the quality setting. Leave the field empty to keep maximum quality.
